Don’t Believe The Hype

You’ve heard the headlines — that short-term rentals are hurting New York City’s housing market. But here’s the truth: responsible home-sharing by one- and two-family homeowners WHO LIVE IN THEIR HOMES isn’t the problem.

This is David vs. Goliath.

This is not about Airbnb versus hotels like you see in the media.

This is about the multi-billion dollar NYC hotel industry crushing 700 private NYC homeowners trying to stay in their homes.

Since 2023, NYC hotels raked in more than $2B in NEW revenues while private homeowners in our community struggle to make ends meet without supplemental income from home-sharing. Several of our members have already been forced out of their homes and out of NYC. Yet, the hotel coalition continues to pour millions of dollars into blocking common-sense amendments to Local Law 18 (LL18) that could help us stay in our homes and take care of our families.

We support common-sense regulations that protect our communities from bad actors who exploit NYC rental markets. But we are not the bad actors you’ve read about — we are real NYC homeowners getting pummeled by the rising costs of owning a home in NYC - insurance, taxes, home repairs.  We rely on responsible home-sharing to supplement our income and help us make ends meet.

Small amendments to LL18 can protect housing, support local economies in the outer boroughs, and help real New Yorkers remain in their homes.

Together, we can bring fairness and common sense back to responsible home-sharing in NYC.
